Hi ,
This is an extra-ordinary newsletter.
First to announce that my disastreous webinar that was given without sound on Monday, is given now in exactly 20 minutes. That is 8 PM GMT and 3 PM in Peru, and Good Morning in Australia and New Zealand.
Today's webinar is about how to see and photograph the best birds of Peru in only 5 days! Sounds incredible, right?
Well, there are three different itineraries you can chose from and these can be put back to back if you wish, but technically you could fly to Lima (once the international quarantine is over, that is) from anywhere in the world during one weekend, bird Monday to Friday and fly back again the next weekend. It will still be an amazing birding holiday, which I will argue in this webinar. If you get an extra day or two at the beginning or the end you may do some birding in Lima or dedicate
time to explore on your own.
Check the webinar here.
1. The Survival of the Feckest competition
As I mentioned in my last email, there is a great Facebook group called #BirdTheFeckAtHome. It is the most novel and fun FB group I know. It is the brainchild of Ed Williams and now has 4500 members. Lots of fun bird related games are making this lockdown and quarantine more barable.
Join.

Today is the last day to vote in the final for "TheFeckest". A standoff between Southern Brown Kiwi on one side and Southern Cassowary on the other. You don't want to miss this.
With Ed's words:
SURVIVAL OF THE FECKEST!
GRAND FINAL!!!
What can I say? It's been a journey through all the countries of the world! Thousands of votes have been cast, and now only two birds remain airborne. Bette Midler had been lined up to sing Wind beneath My Wings to kick this mighty contest off. But we had to cancel, for, of the 16 finalists, you have chosen two flightless ratites from the shores of the Tasman Sea with barely a wing between them...
So much is as stake so first a few ground rules:
- Unlike other polls this will be open for 48 hours. Partly to allow more folks to vote, partly to get you all to invite your mates to join so we get even more votes, but mostly because like Miss Havisham stuck in her wedding dress I am waiting jilted for the Shoebill to walk down the aisle.
- And that is Rule 2. Shoebill can join the vote at which point the vote starts at 0 hours again (but no votes will be discounted - you can of course swap!).
- Rule 3, is no-one can complain about Rule 2.
- Rule 4, to be determined... because I can!
National pride between Australia and New Zealand couldn't be higher! The rest of the world will now look on aghast as patriotic symbols from Silver Ferns to Kangaroos will be flung around. Auckland will burn effigies of Dame Edna, whilst there will be anti Rachel Hunter Riots in the streets of Scone and Maitland as they demand the Hunter Valley changes its name to the Blanchett Valley.
Underlying this national pride will be a battle of the values of #BirdTheFeckAtHome. What is more inspiring? Which backyard bird is the one we view as iconic? Will the cute and
dumpy or the awe-inspiringly terrifying win out.
Whoever wins it will be a victory for the unique, and for the restricted range. It will be a victory for #TeamBird.
One one side we welcome the symbol of New Zealand, the closest thing to the Easter Bunny in feathered form! Punching above its weight, all bow down to SOUTHERN BROWN KIWI!!!!!!
On the other side the most fearsome. awesome, lethal bird on the planet, a walking, living dinosaur, with in built razor blades on both feet. All humbly kneel and pray before SOUTHERN CASSOWARY!!!
So what constitutes the best? In a movie which is the character that makes it for you? Is is the nice, cute funny one, or the lord of all evil!
This is Dobbie versus Voldemort, this is the Ewoks versus the Emperor, Frodo versus Saruman, Margaery versus Cersei.
This is Tweety\ Pie versus the Peaky-fecking-Blinders!
Both are awesome... both are special... and both have been seen in one of your back gardens! But only one can prevail! And that choice is down to you - the true and loyal citizens of #BirdTheFeckAtHome.
2. World Virtual BirdFair
With Biggest Week, British Birdfair, Asian Birdfair, Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, and even Space Coast Birding Festival in Jan 2021, all canceled - and American Birding Expo no more, there really has to be a demand for World Virtual Birdfair.
